Abstract

This analysis discusses the probable effects of conservation zoning on agricultural and forest land use in Brazil. lmplications drawn from the experience of urban planning are suggested for a new official Brazilian conservation unit creatéd in 1981, the Environmental Protection Area. A model is developed to show how zoning especially affects land markets. Some changes in land use caused by zoning may be unpredictable and even undesirable for the environment. Finally, certain situations where zoning may prove successful - those with low transactions costs for implementing regulationare presented.
