Aucomotive emission studies conducted in Brazil, the USA and elsewhere consider 31,5km/h as the réference fleet average speed for light duty vehicles. However, in metropolitan arcas, traffic congestion leads to a significant decrease ín this average speed. This study presents a new emission driving cycle which simulates, in laboratory conditions, congested traffic whith an average speed of 19km/h. Eight vehicles were tested according this ncw cycle and the results indicate an average increase of 25% for carbon monoxide and 20% for hydrocarbon emissions, as well as a 15% reduction for nitrogen oxides. Also, it was noted a 20% increase in fuel consumption.
