This paper presents the limitations, advantages and principal differences between biological monitoring and classical epidemiological studies. These methods provide a valid assessment of human exposure to environmental pollutants. It also emphasizes the necessity and importance of developing preventive strategies for the protection of envirorunental and human health, which consequent!y'require a thorough evaluation of the ecological risk.
