Geophysical principies which have long been applied for oil, mineral and groundwater exploration are now beingapplied to groundwater contanünant studies. The main methods for detection of contaminant sources and migration paths include EM induction, resistivity, ground penetrating radar and magnetics. Addition supplementary methods are applicable for high trends of inorganic contaminants emanating from landfills or spill sites. The primary tasks of these geophysical surveys are to provide targets for subsequent drilling and sampling programs, and to reduce financial and physical risks inherent in contaminant investigations. A brief discussion of the methods and two case histories under Brazilian field conditions are presented.
