This paper compares the exhaust emission and fuel consumption results from two light duty vehicles, originally designed for ethanol use and fueled whith ethanoUgasoline blends and ethanol.Additionally it evaluates the effects on the light duty alcohol vehicles emission if these blends would have been used commercially. The two vehicles were tested on a chassis dinamometer according to the urban driving schedule stablished by the Brasilian standard NBR 6601. Carbon mono xi de (CO), total hydrocarbons"(HC),nitrogen oxides (NOx) and aldehydes (CHO) were analised and are presented in grams of pollutant/kilometer. The study shows that the use of ethanoVgasoline blends on the tested vehicles results in a significant increase in both HC and CO emissions. ForCO, which represents the worst case, the emissions increase varied from 32% to 110%. Asswning that the most conserva tive increase in CO for the alcohol vehicles would be 55 400 t/year.
