Abstract

Acute toxicity tests with Daphnia similis were run as an attempt to give evidence to an environmental quality problem in water bodies receiving domestic and industrial wastewaters. Samples from several rivers and a reservoir from the State of São Paulo were assayed from October 1980 through january 1985. Among 213 samples, 22 caused toxicity, indicating that the environmental conditions were inadequate for the maintenance of aquatic life. A correlation between toxicity and chemical and biological data was not always possible.
